A classic of traditional English flower gardens, this plant produces tall stalks covered with spectacular single flowers, in shades ranging from deep brownish-purple to an almost pure black. This drought-tolerant perennial blooms throughout the summer, creating an elegant and dramatic effect at the back of mixed borders or as a focal point.

Reaching up to 2 m (6.5 ft) in height, the black hollyhock is a strong pollinator attractant, especially for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Although short-lived, it self-seeds easily, ensuring its presence in the garden for several years.

Where to grow black hollyhock?
It thrives in zones 3 to 9, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. It is perfectly suited for country gardens, borders, or naturalized areas.

History and traditional uses
Hollyhocks have been cultivated for centuries, originating in Asia and later introduced to Europe. Appreciated for their ornamental beauty, they have become emblematic of English gardens, symbolizing ambition and summer beauty.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8–9: Direct sow in early spring or fall for vigorous growth.

  • Zones 5–7: Start indoors in late winter or direct sow in spring.

  • Zones 3–4: Sow in spring or mulch heavily if sowing in fall to protect young plants.

How to grow and harvest black hollyhock

  • Sowing: Sow seeds 0.5 to 1 cm (1/4 to 1/2 in) deep, spacing plants 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24 in) apart.

  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency once plants are well developed.

  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms or let them go to seed for natural reseeding.

  • Support: Install stakes in windy areas to support the long flower stalks.

Tips for harvesting seeds

  • Allow to go to seed: Allow some flowers to fully mature and form capsules.

  • Harvest: Pick the capsules when they turn brown and dry, before they open.

  • Drying and cleaning: Spread the capsules in a well-ventilated area to dry, then gently open them to collect the seeds.

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place; viability of 2 to 3 years.
