Delphinium is a must-have plant for ornamental gardens, pollinator gardens, and cut flowers. It produces tall flower spikes covered with vibrant blooms in shades of blue, lavender, and mauve. These elegant perennials add height and texture to garden borders and thrive in cool, moist conditions with well-enriched soil.

Once established, delphinium is robust and long-lasting, though it prefers well-drained soil to prevent root rot in winter. Its slender stems and spectacular flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while also being ideal for floral arrangements.

Where to Grow Delphinium?

Delphiniums grow in zones 3 to 8 and prefer full sun to partial shade, as well as rich, well-drained soil. They are perfect for cottage gardens, perennial borders, and cut flower gardens. In warmer climates, they thrive with some afternoon shade and regular watering.

History and Traditional Uses

Native to mountainous regions of the northern hemisphere, delphinium has been cultivated for centuries for its ornamental beauty. It was traditionally used in English gardens for its majestic habit, and its vibrant colors continue to make it a popular plant in modern landscape designs.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 8: Direct sow in fall or early spring for early, vigorous blooms.
Zones 5 to 7: Start seeds indoors in late winter or direct sow in early spring.
Zones 3 to 4: Direct sow in spring or heavy mulch in winter to protect roots.

How to Grow and Harvest Delphinium

Planting: Sow seeds 3 mm (1/8 in) deep, spacing plants 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24 in) apart.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods.
Staking: Tall varieties may require staking to prevent stems from breaking in windy conditions.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to prolong blooming and encourage a second flush of flowers.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Allow to Flower and Go to Seed: Let some plants fully mature and form seed pods.
Harvesting Seeds: Once pods are dry and brown, harvest them before they open.
Drying and Cleaning: Spread seeds on a cloth and allow them to dry completely before storage.
Storage: Keep seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Seeds remain viable for up to 3 years if stored properly.
