One of our most reliable and productive varieties, with heavy clusters of pear-shaped fruit. This is a semi-determinate variety (meaning it produces fruit on side shoots). It is a unique heirloom tomato, prized for its vibrant orange color, pear-shaped fruit, and sweet, mild flavor.

These tomatoes are both a visual and culinary delight, perfect for adding color to salads, garnishes, or for cooking and preserving.

They pair well with companion plants like basil, marigolds, and onions, which help deter pests and promote growth.

Where can this tomato be grown?

These tomatoes grow well in sunny locations with well-drained soil. They are suitable for greenhouses, raised beds, and large containers, and require at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

History and Traditional Uses

This unusually colored and very productive Roma-type variety was “discovered” in the fruit bowl of our friends Katie and Mark in 2010 (we asked to eat some with our lunch and left with the seeds—they smiled!). It has been our favorite variety ever since.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

To save Giant Orange Pear tomato seeds, use the wet fermentation method:

Selecting the Best Fruit: Choose ripe, healthy tomatoes with desired traits for seed saving.
Extracting Seeds: Cut the tomato and scoop out the seeds with their gel into a clean container.
Fermentation: Add a little water and let it sit at room temperature for 2-3 days, without covering tightly. Stir daily to break down the gel.
Rinsing and Drying: Once the seeds sink to the bottom, pour off the liquid, rinse thoroughly, then spread on a cloth or screen to dry completely.
Freezing: Once fully dry, freeze the seeds for 24-48 hours to kill insects and simulate winter dormancy, which extends their shelf life.
Storage: Store in an airtight container with a silica gel packet to control moisture. Seeds remain viable for about 5 years, and up to 12 years under optimal conditions.
