Ground cherry, also known as goldenberry or husk tomato, is a unique and highly productive fruit plant that produces small, golden berries encased in delicate, papery husks. The name "goldenberry" can also refer to a Cape Gooseberry (Physalis peruviana), which is a larger cousin of the ground cherry. This warm-season crop thrives in sunny, sheltered locations and is well-suited for greenhouse cultivation or container gardening on a patio.

The fruit boasts a vibrant tropical flavor with a perfect balance of tartness and sweetness, making it excellent fresh, in jams, desserts, or even savory dishes. These plants are easy to grow and require minimal maintenance once established. While they prefer warmth, they can also naturalize in coastal gardens with good frost protection.

Where can you grow ground cherries?

Goldenberries grow well in zones 4 to 9, in full sun and well-drained soil. They thrive best in protected locations, such as greenhouses, raised beds, or warm areas of the garden with good air circulation.

History and Traditional Uses

The ground cherry is native to Mexico and Central America, where it has been consumed for centuries for its unique sweet-tart flavor. Traditionally used fresh, dried, or cooked in jams, pies, and sauces, it was adopted by early European settlers and cultivated in North America since the 1800s. Its natural protective husk allowed it to keep well, even in cooler climates. Today, it is still appreciated for its ease of cultivation and distinctive taste.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 8–9: Direct sow in late spring after all danger of frost has passed.
Zones 5–7: Start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, then transplant when the soil is warm.
Zone 4: Recommended for greenhouse or container cultivation to extend the growing season.

How to Grow and Harvest Ground Cherries

Planting: Sow seeds 6 mm (¼ in) deep, spacing plants 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 in) apart.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged.
Support: Although compact, plants benefit from light staking to support abundant fruit production.
Harvesting: Pick fruits when the husks turn light brown and papery. Ripe berries will naturally fall to the ground.
Storage: Store fruits in their husks in a cool, dry place for several weeks.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Choosing the Best Fruits: Select fully ripe berries from healthy, vigorous plants.
Seed Extraction: Remove seeds from the pulp and rinse thoroughly.
Drying and Cleaning: Spread seeds on a paper towel until completely dry.
