Holy Basil (Tulsi) is one of the most revered plants in India, recognized for its spiritual, medicinal, and culinary significance. Its aromatic leaves emit a distinctive clove-like flavor with a slight peppery note, making it a unique addition to herbal teas, herbal blends, and traditional dishes. In Ayurveda, tulsi is considered an adaptogen, helping the body better manage stress while supporting vitality and the immune system. This plant also brings beauty and fragrance to the garden while attracting pollinators.

Where to Grow Holy Basil
Tulsi grows best in full sun and warm conditions. In Canada, it is grown as an annual, but it develops quickly during the summer, whether in the ground, in pots, or in a greenhouse.

History and Traditional Uses
Tulsi has been cultivated for over 3,000 years in Asia, where it is considered the "queen of herbs." In the Hindu tradition, it is often planted near homes and temples as a symbol of protection, health, and devotion. In traditional medicine, it is used to relieve coughs, colds, and digestive disorders. Modern research also highlights its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and adaptogenic properties.

Information for Canadian Zones
Zones 3–5: Grow as a summer annual; sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost.
