The Indigo Rose tomato is a visually striking variety, considered the first truly purple tomato. It was developed by Oregon State University to increase its antioxidant content. Its very dark, almost black, purple fruits add a spectacular touch to the garden.

Beyond its unique appearance, the Indigo Rose offers excellent flavor, good disease resistance, and the ability to ripen reliably after harvest. Its semi-determinate growth habit makes it easy to manage, making it ideal for small gardens, containers, and patio cultivation.

Where to Grow Indigo Rose Tomatoes

Indigo Rose tomatoes thrive in zones 3 to 9. They prefer full sun exposure and fertile, well-drained soil. They are perfectly suited for gardens, greenhouses, containers, and patio cultivation.

History and Traditional Uses

The Indigo Rose tomato was developed by Oregon State University's agricultural program and introduced in the early 2010s. It was specifically bred for its high anthocyanin content, the pigments responsible for its distinctive purple color and associated with antioxidants. Since its introduction, it has garnered significant interest for its unique color, nutritional value, and reliable productivity.

How to Grow and Harvest Indigo Rose Tomatoes

Planting
Sow seeds 6 mm (¼ in) deep indoors. Transplant seedlings outdoors, spacing them 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 in) apart after the last frost.

Watering
Maintain consistent soil moisture during growth and fruit development.

Support
Install stakes or cages to support the semi-determinate growth and the sometimes heavy fruit clusters.

Harvesting
Pick fruits when they are fully colored. They can continue to ripen after harvest if picked slightly before full maturity.

Seed Saving Tips

Fruit Selection
Choose well-ripened tomatoes from vigorous, healthy plants.
