Often overlooked or pulled out like a weed, purslane is a truly underrated edible plant. Its succulent, fleshy leaves and tender stems offer a refreshing crunch and a slight lemony flavor, making it an excellent addition to fresh salads and summer dishes. Rich in antioxidants and omega-3s, it is also one of the most nutritious greens you can grow. Purslane is drought-resistant, fast-growing, and thrives even in poor or disturbed soils, making it an ideal plant for low-maintenance edible gardens.

This is a wild variety of purslane in our region, with larger leaves and good hardiness. It grows taller than a simple ground cover.

Where can purslane be grown?

It thrives in zones 3 to 9 and prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Tolerant of drought and poor soils, it is well-suited for garden beds, pathways, containers, and permaculture-style plantings.

History and Traditional Uses

Purslane has been consumed for thousands of years in many cultures. Traditionally used in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian cuisines, it is recognized for its culinary versatility and nutritional value. Once harvested wild, it is now increasingly cultivated as a leafy green.
