Where to Grow Borage?
Borage thrives in zones 3 to 9, in full sun and well-drained soil. It easily adapts to flower beds, borders, and containers, making it a very versatile plant.

History and Traditional Uses
Originally from the Mediterranean region, borage has been cultivated for centuries for its culinary, medicinal, and ornamental uses. Traditionally, it was associated with relaxation and courage, and its leaves and flowers were used in herbal teas and remedies.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8–9: Sow directly outdoors in early spring or late fall.
  • Zones 5–7: Start indoors in late winter and transplant after the last frost.
  • Zones 3–4: Sow outdoors after the last frost or start indoors for earlier flowering.


How to Grow and Harvest Borage

  • Sowing: Sow seeds 1–2 cm (0.5–1 in) deep, spacing plants 30–45 cm (12–18 in) apart.

  • Watering: Water moderately during establishment; once mature, the plant tolerates drought well.

  • Harvesting: Pick young leaves for best texture and flavor. Harvest flowers as they bloom for fresh or dried use.

  • Maintenance: Allow plants to self-seed naturally to ensure their continued presence in the garden.

Tips for Seed Harvesting

  • Allow to flower and go to seed: Let the flowers form capsules and dry on the plant.

  • Harvest: Pick seed heads when they are dry and brown.

  • Drying and cleaning: Spread seed heads in a ventilated area for complete drying, then gently crush them to release the seeds.

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place; viability up to 5 years.
