Shelling peas are a garden classic, grown for their sweet, round green peas, encased in firm pods. Unlike snow peas or snap peas, they are harvested when fully mature, then shelled before being eaten fresh, steamed, or added to savory dishes. These vigorous and productive climbing plants also offer edible tendrils, flowers, and young shoots early in the season. Thanks to their delicious taste and generous yields, they are essential in any family vegetable garden.

Where to grow shelling peas?
They grow well in zones 3 to 9 and prefer cool, early-season conditions, in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. They appreciate early sowing in spring or in autumn in mild climates. A sturdy trellis or fence is recommended to support the climbing plants.

History and traditional uses
Peas have been cultivated for thousands of years. Originally, they were used as a dried legume before sweet green varieties became popular in cooking. In many cultures, they have long been an important source of protein and nutrients in early spring. Even today, shelling peas remain a much-loved garden vegetable for their rich taste and ease of cultivation.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8–9 : Direct sow late winter to early spring, and again in fall
  • Zones 5–7 : Direct sow early spring as soon as soil is workable; possible fall crop in mild climates
  • Zones 3–4 : Sow as soon as soil can be worked; mulching recommended if cold snap returns after sowing

How to grow and harvest shelling peas

  • Sowing: Sow seeds 2.5 cm (1 in) deep, spacing plants 5 cm (2 in) apart in rows 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 in) apart.

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist without overwatering; water more heavily during flowering and pod formation.

  • Harvesting: Pick pods when they are full but before they dry out. Shell immediately for best flavor.

  • Maintenance: Install a trellis or net to support climbing stems; mulch to retain moisture and control weeds.

Tips for seed harvesting

  • Allow to ripen: Leave a few pods on the plants until they are completely dry.

  • Harvesting: Pick the dry pods and extract the peas inside.

  • Drying and storage: Air dry the seeds for several days before storing.

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place; viable for 3 to 5 years.
