Mouse melons, also known as cucamelons or "Mexican sour gherkins," are one of the most charming additions to the summer garden. These small, elongated fruits resemble mini watermelons and grow to the size of a grape. With their crisp texture and mild flavor reminiscent of cucumber with a citrusy twist, they are perfect in salads, pickled whole, or eaten directly off the vine. The climbing plants are vigorous and benefit from support to facilitate harvesting and improve air circulation.

Where can mouse melons be grown?

These warm-season annuals grow well in zones 4 to 9. They prefer full sun, fertile, well-drained soil, and regular watering. They are ideal for raised beds, patio pots, or grown on trellises and fences.

History and Traditional Uses

Originally from Central America, cucamelons have been cultivated for generations in Mexico and Central America. Valued for their drought resistance and ease of cultivation, they have become popular in gardens worldwide. Although relatively new to many Canadian gardeners, they are gaining popularity for their decorative appearance and interesting yield.
