St. John's Wort is an easy-to-care-for perennial that thrives in a wide variety of garden conditions, especially in sunny, dry areas. History and historical uses
Used for centuries in herbal medicine, St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) was already recognized in ancient Greece for its medicinal properties. Traditionally applied for various ailments, it is now recognized for its role in mood support and the treatment of mild to moderate forms of depression. Its name comes from its flowering period around St. John's Day in June.

Zones 8–9: Direct sow in early spring or late fall; very low watering needs.
Zones 5–7: Sow in spring after the last frost or sow indoors then transplant.
Zones 3–4: Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost then harden off before transplanting.

How to grow and harvest St. John's Wort

Planting: Sow seeds on the surface or lightly press them into the soil, spacing plants 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 in) apart.
Watering: Keep soil moist until established, then reduce watering.
Harvest: Harvest flowering tops at peak bloom for drying or making tinctures.
Maintenance: Cut back after flowering to encourage compact growth.
