Where to Grow the Fava Bean Mix

Fava beans thrive in zones 3 to 9, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. Very cold-hardy, they are ideal for early spring planting. Perfect for flower beds, raised gardens, or naturalized areas.

History and Uses

Fava beans have been cultivated for thousands of years. Originating in the Mediterranean basin, they spread throughout Europe. Very common in British gardens, they are prized for their versatility and nutritional benefits. Rich in protein, fiber, and essential vitamins, they are an important ingredient in many traditional dishes.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 8-9: Sow directly in early spring or fall for successive harvests.
Zones 5-7: Plant outdoors in early spring, as soon as the soil is workable.
Zones 3-4: Start seeds indoors in early spring or plant outdoors with protection to extend the season.

How to Grow and Harvest Fava Bean Mix

Planting: Sow seeds 2.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in) deep and space them 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) apart, in rows 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 in) apart.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and pod formation.
Harvesting: Harvest young pods for fresh consumption, or let them mature fully to shell or dry. Regular harvesting encourages continuous production.
Support: Provide light staking or a trellis if plants grow tall in windy areas.

Tips for Seed Harvesting

Allow pods to mature: Let some pods dry completely on the plant until they become brown and brittle.
Harvesting seeds: Collect the dry pods and extract the seeds.
Cleaning and drying: Spread the seeds on a clean surface to dry for 1 to 2 weeks.
Storage: Store seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored, they remain viable for 3 to 5 years.
