Calendula (pot marigold) is a cheerful and versatile annual that brings both beauty and utility to the garden. Its vibrant flowers, ranging from yellow to bright orange, are not only decorative but also edible, adding a pop of color and a mild flavor to salads, teas, quiches, or baked goods.

Calendula's medicinal properties make it a must-have in herbal medicine, especially for soothing skin irritations or for making infused oils and balms. It is highly attractive to pollinators, easy to grow, self-seeds readily, and offers continuous blooms throughout the season.

Where to grow calendula
Calendula thrives in zones 3 to 9. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is perfect for flowerbeds, borders, and containers, and fits beautifully into pollinator or cottage-style gardens.

History and traditional uses
Native to the Mediterranean basin, calendula has been used for centuries for its medicinal, culinary, and ornamental properties. It was once used to heal wounds, color dishes, and even textiles. Today, its many applications continue to make it a highly valued plant in gardens and kitchens worldwide.

Zones 3–4: Sow outdoors after the last frost or start indoors for a head start.

How to grow and harvest calendula

Planting: Sow seeds 1 to 2 cm (0.5 to 1 inch) deep and space plants 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches) apart.

Watering: Water moderately, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged.

Harvesting: Pick flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming. Use fresh petals in cooking or dry them for later use.

Care: Calendula requires little care and adapts to different soil types.

Tips for harvesting seeds for future supply

Allow to flower and go to seed: Leave some flowers on the plant until seed heads form and dry.

Harvesting seeds: Pick the dry heads and carefully remove the seeds.

Drying and storage: Spread the seeds on a clean cloth or sieve to dry completely. Then store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Seeds can be stored for up to 5 years.
