Our Lettuce Mix is a diverse and colourful blend of romaine, loose-leaf, and butterhead varieties, developed and selected on Metchosin Farm since 2004. This blend includes cultivated lettuces as well as wild varieties that have naturalized in our coastal garden over the years. We chose these lettuces for their early germination, mild flavour, beauty and diversity of textures and colours, as well as their resistance to heat and cold. Whether you are growing for baby greens or full heads, this mix brings variety, vigour, and reliability to your salad bowl.

Where to Grow Lettuce Mix?
Lettuce mix grows well in zones 3–9, in full sun to partial shade. It thrives in cool spring and fall temperatures and prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Suitable for raised beds, row cropping, and containers.

History & Traditional Uses
This custom blend reflects many years of natural selection and cultivation at Metchosin Farm. It includes lettuces from seed exchanges, heirloom varieties, and wild plants adapted to our coastal climate. Lettuce has been cultivated for over 4,000 years and remains one of the most widely grown leafy greens in the world.

Canadian Hardiness Zone Info
Zones 8–9: Sow directly outdoors as early as February and again in late summer for fall harvests.
Zones 5–7: Start indoors in early spring or sow directly as soon as the soil is workable.
Zones 3–4: Start indoors and transplant after the last frost; provide shade in summer to prolong the harvest.

How to Grow & Harvest Lettuce Mix

Planting: Sow seeds 3 mm (1/8 in) deep, spacing plants 15–30 cm (6–12 in) apart for head lettuce, or more densely for baby greens.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist for tender growth; use mulch to conserve moisture.
Harvesting: Cut leaves as needed or harvest entire plants; successive plantings ensure continuous production.
Care: Thin young plants to reduce competition and improve air circulation.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Plant Selection: Allow several vigorous plants to bolt and flower.
Seed Harvest: When seed heads dry and become fluffy, cut and place in a paper bag.
Drying & Cleaning: Remove debris and allow seeds to dry completely.
Storage: Keep in a cool, dark, dry place in airtight containers. Seeds remain viable for 4–6 years.
