Mullein (Molène) is a robust and striking biennial herb that brings a strong presence to the garden. In its first year, the plant forms a large rosette of thick, soft, grayish-green, fuzzy leaves. These leaves are both ornamental and traditionally used in herbal medicine. In the second year, the plant develops a tall flower stalk, reaching up to 3 meters, covered with yellow flowers that bloom from summer to autumn. These flowers attract pollinators, and once dry, the stalks produce seeds that are appreciated by birds and used in crafts.

Where to grow mullein
This drought-tolerant species thrives in full sun and poor to average soils. It often flourishes where other plants struggle to establish. Hardy in zones 3 to 9, it is suitable for naturalized meadows, xeriscaping, and low-maintenance borders.

History and traditional uses
Used for centuries in Europe and North America, mullein holds an important place in traditional medicine, particularly for respiratory ailments. The leaves were used in infusions or poultices, while the flowers were used to prepare oils. Dried stalks were sometimes dipped in suet to make torches or used in dried floral arrangements. Its medicinal and ecological value explains its lasting presence in herb gardens.

Information for Canadian zones
Zones 8–9: Direct sow in fall or early spring.
Zones 5–7: Direct sow in spring or start indoors then transplant.
Zones 3–4: Sow early indoors, then harden off plants before planting out after the risk of frost.

How to grow and harvest mullein

Planting: Sow seeds on the surface (light is needed for germination), spacing plants 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 in) apart.

Watering: Minimal watering once the plant is established. Water mainly during the first year to encourage root development.

Harvesting: Harvest leaves in the first year and flowers during blooming for herbal use.

Maintenance: Little maintenance required. Cut flower stalks before seed production if you wish to limit spread.

Tips for harvesting seeds for future supply

Allow to flower: Allow flower stalks to fully mature and dry on the plant.

Seed harvest: Collect seeds from dry capsules before natural dispersal.

Drying and storage: Dry completely before storing in airtight containers.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place. Seeds remain viable for 2 to 3 years.
