This cosmos mix is a spectacular and easy-to-grow annual, known for its vibrant and long-lasting blooms, as well as its light and airy foliage. It produces a variety of colors, including pink, orange, and white, bringing charm and movement to flowerbeds and wild meadows. With its slender stems reaching up to 2m, cosmos makes a remarkable addition to pollinator gardens and cut flower bouquets.

These robust plants tolerate dry conditions well and require very little maintenance, making them ideal for low-maintenance landscaping. Regular deadheading or frequent harvesting encourages continuous flowering from summer to autumn.

Where to Grow the Cosmos Mix?
Cosmos thrives in zones 3 to 9, in full sun and well-drained soil. It is perfect for wild meadows, cottage gardens, cut flower beds, and also grows very well in large containers.

History and Traditional Uses
Originating from Mexico and Central America, cosmos has long been cultivated for its ornamental beauty and its attractiveness to pollinators. Traditionally present in cottage gardens and natural meadows, its drought tolerance and long flowering period have made it a favorite among gardeners worldwide.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8–9: Direct sow in fall or early spring for early flowering.

  • Zones 5–7: Start indoors in late winter or direct sow in spring after the last frost.

  • Zones 3–4: Direct sow in spring when the soil has warmed, or start indoors to extend flowering.

How to Grow and Harvest the Cosmos Mix

  • Sowing: Sow seeds 3 mm (1/8 in) deep, spacing plants 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 in) apart.

  • Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist until plants are established; cosmos then prefers drier conditions once mature.

Harvesting:

  • Pick flowers regularly to stimulate the production of new blooms.

  • Cut stems when flowers are fully open for long-lasting bouquets.

  • Maintenance: Allow some flowers to go to seed to encourage natural self-seeding and regrowth the following year.

Tips for Seed Harvesting

  • Allow to flower and go to seed: Let some flowers dry on the plant and form seed heads.

  • Harvest: When the seed heads turn brown, gently pick them and extract the seeds.

  • Drying and Cleaning: Spread the seeds on a towel and let them dry completely before storing.

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container, in a cool, dark place; viable for up to 3 years.
